African music legend “Tuku” is back in the City
2015-08-07Staff Report 2 Windhoek One of the top leading Zimbabwean musical legends, Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi is expected to be back in the land of the brave to perform at the Winter Festival Concert, hosted at the Zoo Park Amphitheatre in the capital tomorrow. This follows his massive performances during the 10th anniversary of The Southern Times newspaper at the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino last September. According to the WFC event organiser, Amor Basson, popularly known as Amor in the entertainment circles, preparations are at an advanced stage and everything is going according to schedule. “We are actually in the countdown to the event. All is in place and we are set to bring the best show in Windhoek this year. This is a must-attend show, which will cater for all groups and classes,” says Amor. He adds that Multichoice being the main sponsor of the event, a lot has been done to market the event in the print and electronic media. “Choosing Tuku to perform at this festival coincided with his tour of Southern Africa which starts on Friday in Zimbabwe, Namibia Saturday and Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday. He is one of the legends in Southern Africa when it comes to music and has a huge following in the country,” says Amor. He adds that Tuku will be performing songs from his old albums as well as the latest album released last year. “There will be a press brief and interviews at the Furstenhof Hotel on Saturday in the afternoon,” he says. Utjiua Muinjangwe, a lecturer at the University of Namibia (Unam) and one of Tuku’s biggest fans, says she is very excited to relive the massive performance of his great artist. “Tuku is one of the enormous performers and I just hope he will perform the way I know him. So I can’t wait to enjoy his great show and I hope we all have a good time,” she says. Another fan of Tuku, Penda Absalom, says it was a good idea for the organisers to bring Tuku back to Namibia as this will give a platform to other Namibian artists willing to follow his footstep. Tuku began his performing journey in 1977 in Zimbabwe when he joined the Wagon Wheels band. Their single Dzandimomotera went gold and Tuku's first album followed, which was also a major success. With his husky voice, Tuku has become the most recognised voice to emerge from Zimbabwe and onto the international scene, and he has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond. He sings in the nation's dominant Shona language, along with Ndebele and English. He also incorporates elements of different musical traditions, giving his music a distinctive style, known to fans as Tuku Music. He has had a number of tours around the world and has been on several tours in the United Kingdom (UK), United State of America (USA) and Canada, to perform for large audiences. Ndilimani Cultural Troupe and the Zamar Band will be curtain raising for Tuku. Tickets of the festival are N$ 200 and available at National Theatre of Namibia (NTN).
