Growth strategies identified for 10 local industries
Windhoek - The Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development (MITSMED) on Friday morning launched ten Industry Growth Strategies and a new Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Policy that are aimed at shaping a new business environment for local businesses. However, during the launch Minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko cautioned that policies and strategies alone do not help if they are not followed by implementation. Through the execution of the 10 Industry Growth Strategies as well as the MSME National Policy, the MITSMED, in close cooperation with other line ministries, will support local value addition, upgrading and economic diversification. “Namibia is striving to become an industrialised economy by the year 2030. In order to achieve this target we must improve our delivery rates in terms of policy implementation significantly. Namibia has agreed on its fourth National Development Plan 4 as the overall economic development agenda which will be required to be implemented to reach our 2030 targets. NDP4 will now be replaced by the NDP5,” said Ngatjizeko. He added that the involvement of the general public and private stakeholders will be a critical success factor for the new strategies and policies. “”It is also true that without the commitment of our vibrant business community, the efforts of our government will remain in vain. It is the knowledge and know-how of our businessmen and businesswomen that ensure that Namibian products and services meet international standards. It is the tireless efforts of our thriving businessmen and businesswomen that ensure growth and development,” said Ngatjizeko. He therefore encouraged greater cooperation among government and entities from the private sector and civil society. This continued commitment will be necessary for the success in MSME development and uplifting the 10 identified industries. The ten industries identified for growth are taxidermy, cosmetics, metal fabrication, leather, handicraft, wood charcoal, seafood, game meat, jewellery and coloured gemstone and Swakara wool.
