N$47 300 fraud suspect granted bail
Windhoek A man accused of defrauding a woman of N$47 300 was yesterday granted bail of N$10 000 in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court. The accused, Edwin Narib, faces a charge of theft under false pretences. Court documents indicate that between January 29 2014 and April 23 2014, he informed Paulina Uses that he would buy a car for her from England. Narib allegedly further informed Uses that the car had arrived and needed to be collected from Walvis Bay harbour, but that customs clearance fees needed to be paid. He then demanded N$47 300, while knowing that he did not buy the car from England, court documents state. The money was allegedly transferred from Keetmanshoop and Tsumeb into Narib’s account while he was in Windhoek. Narib’s legal rights were explained to him and he indicated that he would obtain a private lawyer. Prosecutor Erastus Hatutale requested that the matter be remanded to January 25 2016. “State does not object to bail, however the amount involved is N$47 300 and none of this was recovered,” Hatutale said. May the bail be fixed at N$10 000, he added.“I recently started a new job and I have children to take care of, I can only afford N$3 000,” Narib informed the court. Magistrate Celma Amadhila denied the request. She said that the amount involved is relatively high. “In my opinion bail of N$10 000 is reasonable given the circumstances of this case.”
