Namibia to Learn from Indonesian Micro-Finance
2006-07-21Staff Report 2 "By Surihe Gaomas WINDHOEK Namibia looks set to benefit from the international arena of micro-financing training to be held in Indonesia next week. Edwards Iraeua Ruhaka from the Namibian Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (Namfisa) has been selected by the Indonesian government as a candidate for the international training course to be held in Jakarta and Bandung, West Java from July 24 to August 11. The theme of three-week course is, ""Third Country Training Program on Microfinance for the African Region."" The Indonesian government under the Programme of Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) is holding the training programme. Before his departure to Indonesia, Ruhaka will make a courtesy call on the Indonesian Ambassador to Namibia Gede Putu Artisme today to discuss and gain more insight about the training programme. Ruhaka holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Namibia and has vast experience in the Namibian financial sector. He has been working as a senior analyst at Namfisa for the past five years. For the past 15 years, both Namibia and Indonesia have enjoyed mutual bilateral relations and cooperation. Since then, the two countries have collaborated as partners in the United Nations and various international forums including the Non-Aligned Movement. Information about the TCDC initiative serves mainly as a means to build communication and promote wider cooperation between developing countries. In this way, developing countries like Namibia and Indonesia can exchange knowledge and expertise to become self reliant for economic prosperity. Indonesia's long experience in poverty eradication, family planning and food self-sufficiency including micro-finance places it in a good position to share such experiences with other developing countries. Against this background, the Government of Indonesia, as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement in cooperation with the Government of Japan is organising an international training course, held annually by the Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation, or in short NAM CSSTC. Since 1991, thirty one Namibians have been elected by NAM CSSTC to take part in various programmes. Among them are the Press and Public Relations Training Courses that ran from 1991 up to 1998, International Training Course on Agriculture Engineering and Technology in 2000 and 2001 and Increasing Prospects for Rapid and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development through Business Incubators and Entrepreneurship in 2003. With the first training programme to be conducted by NAM CSSTC this year, Namibia looks set to gain valuable knowledge theoretically and practically about micro-finance. The purpose of the training is to provide participants from African countries with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and techniques in this specific field. Apart from Namibia, 14 other African candidates from Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia will attend the course." 2006-07-21Staff Report 2
