Accompanying the frogs are generous servings of ombidi (wild spinach), and mahangu pap – more cherished delicacies known for their distinctive flavour and nutritional value.
Lucas’ rendition of this traditional dish promises to satisfy even the most discerning palates.
Her skilful preparation ensures that each serving of pap is a comforting and authentic addition to the dining experience.
Lucas raves that the frogs are delicious, tender, flavourful, and a unique twist to the meal.
“As for the ombidi, its rich and tangy taste is a true delight. The mahangu provides a hearty and satisfying element to the meal. It’s a great staple with a lovely texture.”
Lucas noted that the meal was received with great enthusiasm and appreciation.
“Most people enjoy traditional food, but they don’t really get a chance to buy these dishes since there are only a handful of places that sell traditional food. So when people saw that I had advertised the food, they were excited and wanted to try it out, and I can say they haven’t stopped complimenting the meal. Everyone who bought the food really loved it,” she said.
Further singing the frogs’ praises, Lucas said they can provide several nutritional benefits.
“They are a good source of lean protein, which is essential for muscle growth, repair, and overall health. They are also low in fat and calories, making them a nutritious choice for those looking to maintain a healthy weight.
Frogs contain various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, and potassium, which are important for energy production, bone health, and proper functioning of the nervous system.”
Mahangu is highly nutritious, and it is gluten-free. It is rich in fibre, and minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, while ombidi is a good source of protein, iron and Vitamin C.
Lucas further said preparing frogs is time-consuming whereas ombidi and mahangu do not consume much of her time.
