ONGWEDIVA – The annual Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School (GTSS) tournament was officially launched on Monday.
The sporting event is scheduled to take place from 16 to 18 May 2025.
Speaking at the launch, school principal Sakaria Eelu highlighted the tournament’s growth and unifying role since its inception in 1997 for schools in the northern part of Namibia.
He said the school initiated the tournament to provide a platform for engagement between different schools and the wider community.
“We want to create lasting partnerships between schools and, at the same time, boost the local economy of the town and region at large during the tournament,” he remarked.
Eelu said the school has invested about N$40 000 into the event, and received over N$20 000 in pledges during the launch.
The tournament will feature five sport codes: boys and girls’ football, netball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, volleyball and chess.
Tournament ambassador and former Brave Warriors’ player Benson Shilongo, a former learner of GTSS, encouraged all sport enthusiasts to attend and support the participating players.
He said the tournament serves as a valuable platform for talented young individuals to showcase their abilities.
“It is a fantastic arena for the many talented young individuals in our region to display their skills and passion for their chosen sport. Come and witness future stars in action,” he remarked.
