Heatwave hits coast

Coastal residents this week are flocking to beaches to swim and cope with the extremely hot weather conditions currently experienced at the coastal towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

However, Monarch Lifeguard and Emergency Rescue Services has since issued a warning to residents, saying that the hot weather increases the risk of drowning.

“These scorching days draw crowds to beaches and swimming areas seeking relief, but they also increase the danger of drowning if proper precautions are not taken,” Muyenga said.

Muyenga called on parents to always supervise children and warned against using empty plastic bottles as flotation devices when visiting beaches or swimming pools.

He said children should never be left unattended near water or visit beaches alone.
