Homeless given food, sleeping bags

Home National Homeless given food, sleeping bags

Helping the indigent … The Methodist Church Women Prayer Group on Saturday gave out soup, bread, blankets and sleeping bags to more than 50 people who live on the streets of Windhoek. “We were made aware through radio and television that there are destitute people suffering and sleeping in places without blankets and go to bed on empty stomachs. As church members we felt we should reach out to these people, as in God’s eyes we are all equal. Most of the sleeping bags we made ourselves by using newspapers and plastic bags,” said Maureen Prinz, the group’s leader.

Lerato Nxobo, a 49-year-old who has been homeless and living on the streets since the age of 12, said: “I cannot describe the feeling, especially how people think about us on the street. The government could have done more to give us something because we do not have anything and this leads us to cause trouble. Because of hunger we tend to do more unnecessary things. But today I feel very happy.” In the photo are the women from the Methodist Church Women Prayer Group with some of the ‘street roomers’ who received blankets.
