The Kavanho Horticulture Area Committee recently elected its Management Committee during a well-attended event by producers from both Kavango East and West, representing their irrigation schemes and independent small scale growers.

Speaking about his election, and the role of the committee in the Kavango regions, Chairperson Matthias Murgonga, said: “I will do my best to work for the benefit of all and to represent all producers in their best interest not just around Rundu and Salem but up from the east in Divundu to Mpungu in the west, making sure all our plights are heard outside the region and in Windhoek.”

There are nine Horticultural Area Committees in Namibia. Each committee plays a vital role in developing horticultural production and food sustainability in their respective region. Committee members work closely with producers at grass roots level, and alert the horticultural industry about issues and challenges in their areas. These issues are then taken up by the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) and channelled through to Agricultural Marketing and Trade Agency (AMTA) and Agribusdev, who are appointed as agents to handle matters concerning production, marketing, handling and trade in the horticultural sector.
