Murder passed off as hit-and-run

The police have arrested a 38-year-old man for the murder of an elderly Angolan man, whose body was then dumped in the road at Makandu village in the Ndonga Linena Constituency, Kavango East.
“We have arrested a 38-year-old man, who is suspected of the murder,” detective chief inspector Chrispin Mubebo of the police in Kavango East confirmed this week. The main suspect was arrested on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Antonio Vasco.
Initially the police thought the man was a victim of a hit-and-run incident, because his body lay near the road. Further investigations however confirmed that he was murdered.
“The investigation proved the Angolan man was not bumped by a car, but was beaten with a stick. So we pursued the suspected killer until we found the him. He is in custody now and will appear in court today,” Mubebo told New Era in Rundu yesterday. It is clear to the police that Vasco was murdered and his corpse abandoned in the road.
“The suspect beat the complainant with a stick. The old man died on the spot and [the attacker] then removed the body and placed it on the road to make it look as if it was a hit-and-run,” Mubebo said.
It is rumoured that the suspect – who has not yet been named pending his first appearance in court – beat the old man to death because the deceased was apparently buying alcohol with money he got from selling items bought for him by the suspect.
