Namcol last week awarded prizes to students who performed well in the 2020 Junior Secondary Certificate, Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary certificate examinations as well as those of the technical and vocational education and training.

The hard working students received cash prizes, and a few sponsorships from various companies were handed out.

Namcol director Harold Murangi during the ceremony said the Covid-19 pandemic raging around the globe has caused large-scale institutional and behavioural shock effects in various areas of education.  However, as an open and distance learning institution, they continue to press forward against all odds.

“I have steered this ship with the support of my team through many waters, but we never experienced the rough waters of the last two years.  We have never sailed with a pandemic before, and this one caused havoc in the way we conduct our business as an educational institution,” he said.

This year, the institution reduced the number of recipients to 26 from the usual figure of more than 100 they had over the years. “The positive aspect is we have increased the incentives from the usual minimum N$800 per subject to N$1 500,” he added.

The prize-giving ceremony was officially established in 2010 students to work hard. The best overall student award went to Peter Kafuru, who received a scholarship to the value of N$30 000, N$10 000 cash and a tablet.  The main sponsors of the event were Bank Windhoek and Retirement Fund Solutions.
