Namibia’s elections impress US Ambassador

United States Ambassador to Namibia, Randy Berry has lauded Namibians for taking their civic right to vote seriously in the just-concluded 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Berry made the remarks at State House while paying a courtesy visit to President Nangolo Mbumba yesterday.
“We had observation teams throughout the country coordinating with the International Relations Ministry. What struck me was the devotion of Namibians. There were challenges, but my takeaway is that Namibians take their responsibility to vote very seriously. They showed us how seriously they take their civic responsibility,” Berry told Mbumba, who, at the same event described the elections as tough and complicated.
Mbumba, in the same vein, emphasised the strong bilateral relationship between Namibia and the US, which he maintained benefits Namibians in various key areas.
“We have a solid bilateral relationship benefiting Namibians. From health, trade, and various programmes where our young people are going to the US and learning new things. These are all benefits. We also have Peace Corps volunteers from the US, who have mastered Namibian languages,” Mbumba said.
Berry, in response, expressed gratitude for the relationship he has built with Mbumba during his tenure.
“It is very important to us. You have mentioned the people-to-people exchanges and these are very productive. Just a few weeks ago, I attended the swearing-in of new Peace Corps volunteers, so we are gradually increasing the number of volunteers we have had in the country. The value of this is that it increases great understanding. We certainly hope we can continue this,” Berry stressed.
