WINDHOEK THE new N$30-million commercial complex in the heart of the Windhoek CBD is underway, with developers United Africa Group promising to add fresh life to the core zone in town. During the earlier site handover this year to contractors Grinaker-LTA Namibia, United Africa Group announced that the building was scheduled for completion by July 2006. The modern development lies directly alongside the well-known Gutenberg Platz shopping mall with its old world architectural appeal. The intention is to integrate Gutenberg Platz with the new development, which will aptly be called ‘Gutenberg Plaza’. The new building was designed by Jaco Wasserfall Architects, a company renowned for breathing fresh air into the Windhoek architectural scene. Other consultants employed for the project are Windhoek Consulting Engineers, GS Fainsinger Consulting Engineers and Hendrik Herselman Quantity Surveyors. The commercial complex houses four floors of a new grade office space plus a penthouse on the fifth floor. The total floor area earmarked for offices is approximately 3200sq metres. In addition, shops are planned on the lower ground floor, and ground floor facing Werner List Street. The total floor area earmarked for shops/retail is approximately 400 sq metres. Total Namibia has been secured as the anchor tenant for the new building and will take up two floors at the new complex. In addition, there will be a host of new businesses and shops Longstanding tenants in the Gutenberg Platz are the Book Den, Eternity Designs, Air Namibia and Susanne Hartwig Goldsmith. The new building will offer about 65 parking bays to tenants and visitors, which will be complemented by public parking in the City Centre parkade right on its doorstep.
