Swapo Party MP Peya Mushelenga has urged the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) to work harder and to ensure that it recruits more members.
Speaking at the official opening of the SPYL Khomas Regional Conference, Mushelenga said there are many youth who are undecided in terms of political affiliation and that they must be informed about Swapo Party. The MP said a number of youth in the Congress of Democrats (CoD) are disgruntled because of recent developments in the main opposition party and must “come to a decent political home”.
Mushelenga noted that as youth of the ruling party, members need to read the party’s election manifesto and congress resolutions and take stock of how the objectives have been implemented. SPYL should then advise and assist the party to achieve its objective of bringing development to all Namibians.
Mushelenga urged SPYL members to foster unity within the party and warned that they should not allow anyone to try and capitalize on divisions that might be in the party.
The Khomas Regional Conference, which is the highest decision-making body in the region, at its fourth regional conference adopted and approved the regional SPYL activities reports and elected a new leadership.
Salomon Ilovu was re-elected as the Khomas Regional Secretary of SPYL following a strong challenge from Paula Cooper of the Windhoek Rural District. Frans Kauandunga was elected Regional Secretary for Information and Mobilization, replacing Muesee Kazapua, while Ben Sheehama was elected treasurer.
The Khomas Regional Conference is part of the preparation for the SPYL Congress scheduled for later this year. All regions except Erongo, Oshikoto and Caprivi have held their regional conferences in preparation for the SPYL Congress. No date has yet been set for the congress, but the Central Committee is expected to meet next month to set the date. The newly-elected Khomas Regional Executive Committee is expected to meet soon to decide on their preferred candidates for the upcoming congress.
However, some of the regions have proposed Elijah Ngurare as the sole candidate for the position of Secretary of SPYL, while the acting and deputy secretary, Evelyn Nawases-Tayale, is expected to face a strong challenge from Judas Shikomba for the position.
