By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK Bank Windhoek, in partnership with the Chefs Association of Namibia and Cancer Association of Namibia, early this week officially launched the Bank Windhoek Apple Project Recipe Competition at a ceremony held in the city. The competition was launched under the theme, “Eat Healthy. Live Healthy. Prevent Cancer.” According to the Head: Corporate Communication and Social Investment, Helene Badenhorst, Bank Windhoek, together with the Cancer Association of Namibia, would like to take this message further by fostering a sense of responsibility towards health in all Namibians. All Namibians are invited to enter their favourite apple recipes and help increase awareness on healthy eating to prevent cancer. “Through the recipe competition, Bank Windhoek would like to encourage the public to follow a well-balanced and healthy eating plan. So Namibians can prevent cancer by eating the right food for a healthier nation overall,” said Badenhorst. Only one recipe per individual entry is allowed and should be typed or hand-written, accompanied by a colour photograph of the dish and the entrant’s name. The winners will be announced on 28 May. The public will have an opportunity to taste the winning recipes at the Chefs Association show stand at the Namibia Tourism Expo scheduled for 30 May to 2 June here, she said. The overall winner of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project Recipes Competition will enjoy a fabulous weekend for two at Divava Okavango Lodge and Spa. Terry Jenkinson of the Chefs Association of Namibia thanked the associations for the work on the Cancer Apple Project Recipe Competition. Bank Windhoek, Cancer Association of Namibia and Chefs Association of Namibia are working together to fight cancer in Namibia. The recipes will be judged according to the following criteria: the main ingredient of the recipe must be fresh apples, preference will be given to recipes that are based on a healthy lifestyle, the recipes can be a starter, main course, dessert, tart or coke. Judging will be based on originality, simplicity, nutritional value, presentation and taste or flavours. A photograph should accompany the recipe, which must serve a minimum of six people. Director of Cancer Association of Namibia, Reinette Koeglenberg, said the project is truly blessed because of the three associations’ support. The associations care about the project and would like it to be successful, she said. Koeglenberg added that, N$15 million has been allocated to fund the treatment of patients and another N$15 million is being allocated for cancer prevention. She said, “With Bank Windhoek ,we decided to encourage people to change their lifestyles, stop smoking and live a healthy life.” The public at large are encouraged to consult their doctors when experiencing the following signs, which can lead to cancer, unusual bleeding or discharge, a lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere, a sore that does not heal, change in normal bowel or bladder habits, hoarseness or cough, indigestion or difficult in swallowing, sudden loss of weight, she said.
