Premier netball league kicks off...action set for today

The highly anticipated MTC Netball Namibia Premier League (NNPL) was launched in Windhoek yesterday, with netball action set to start today.

Namibia’s telecommunication giant, MTC, will sponsor the league with N$4.2 million for the next three years.

The league will see 12 teams contest for top honours. The four bottom teams are bound for relegation at the end of every season, while four teams will gain promotion to this league after regional play-off matches scheduled for October.

Each team will receive N$60 00 to assist with logistics – and all teams are obligated to pay players and have running contracts for them. Speaking at the launch, Netball Namibia (NN) secretary general Imelda Nerongo said despite the limited amount, they will, by all means, try to run the league professionally.

She also urged other corporate companies to assist teams in their regions.

“We aim to bring netball closer to the people in hopes to reignite the fever across the country; therefore, games will be played as of tomorrow until September. We hope that Covid-19 will leave us soon so that our people can support our girls so that they are inspired,” said Nerongo.

Speaking at the same event, NN vice president Rebecca Goagoses said it is a dream come true to see this netball league commence after years of perusing the idea.

“We are honoured to receive a gift from MTC in the form of a sponsorship. You have no idea what this means for us – not only those of us who are on the board of Netball Namibia but also leaders of various regional federations and netball at large,” she said.

Goagoses said this league will be the right place to scout for high-quality players.
