Simonis Storm dominate time trials

Simonis Storm men’s and women’s teams dominated the Nedbank Windhoek Pedal Power Race Series Team Time Trials (TTT) race in Windhoek last Sunday.

The races, which had 27 female and 40 male cyclists take part, saw the Simonis Storm men’s team consisting of Drikus Coetzee, Ingram Cuff, Gerhard Mans, Horst Newmann, and Clinton Hilfiker win the men’s race by completing the 33-kilometre distance in 40 minutes, 24 seconds (40:24 seconds), ahead of Cymot Men A Team, who came second in 43:34 seconds.

The Cymot team was made up of Kai Pritzen, Christian Janse van Rensburg, Hardus Nel, Gino Chiappini, and Pierre Knoetze. Third place was occupied by FLM Men, who crossed the finishing line at 45:06 seconds. FLM is comprised of Konrad Marais, Vernon Maresch, Des Doman, Marcel Suren, and George Thiele.

In the ladies’ race, the Simonis Storm women’s team of Anri Krugel, Benita Windsch, Lelani Swart, Anneke Steenkamp, and Maike Bochert clocked 48:56 seconds to win the race ahead of Irene Steyn, Risa Dreyer, Silke Bean, Marion Schoenecke, and Belinda van Rhyn from the MBM Ladies team, who clocked 50:35 seconds in second place. Third place was taken by the MSL Ladies team, which clocked 50:48 seconds, and was comprised of Genevieve Webber, Nicole Spangenberg, Monique Taylor, and Marcelle Elloff.

Organiser Stephanus Feris said the event was a success as most cyclists attended.

“The riders will accumulate points throughout the year, and the total scoring will determine which team wins the series,” Feris said. He added that they are looking forward to the fifth event, which will take place on 20 August, before concluding the year with a race at a surprise location early in September.

Nedbank Namibia communication and public relations manager, Selma Kaulinge, said: “We are nearing the end of yet another successful season in the Nedbank Windhoek Pedal Power Race Series. So much has happened since we started this season off on a high in Dordabis earlier this year, and we are excited to see how the final will play out. The next race in the series will take place in Teufelsschlucht this coming Sunday, and we are urging road cyclists to not miss this one,” Kaulinge said.
