Afcon Social Namibia edition a success

Zimbabwe won the first-ever ‘Afcon Social Namibian Edition’ football tournament after defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final recently.

The tournament was organised by Windhoek-based social league side Voltman Football Club (FC), and it took place at the Khomasdal Stadium.

The event coincided with Africa Day and modelled the African Cup of Nations tournament.

It saw a total of six teams, made up of Namibian-based expatriates from various African countries, battle it out for the top honours.

Close to 40 players from different countries took part.

A second Zimbabwe team ended third and Angola fourth.

The other countries were Namibia, Malawi and Nigeria.

Jonas IIeka, who is part of the organising team, said the event was aimed at celebrating the diversity of Africa and building a sense of unity among Africans.

“The idea is great, and it lived up to expectations. This showed unity amongst Africans, which was a great thing to see. What made it a success story is the fact that this was the first time it took place, and the response was overwhelming.”

“Very few sports have the ability to unite people like football.  Our theme for this year’s edition ‘Lakini wewe ni ndugu yangu’ which is Swahili for ‘But you are my brother after all’, and is a big call for us all to introspect and realise that ultimately, we are one,” he said.

Organisers intend to make the event an annual competition, with hopes to have a bigger and better event next year.
