Cop denied bail for shooting civilian

RUNDU - Jonas Kandiwapa Mwonde, a police officer from Ndama sub-station in Rundu who was arrested last week for allegedly shooting a civilian, was denied bail on Thursday.

Mwonde (45) made his debut appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court before magistrate Selma Shiiga.

The prosecution is charging Mwonde with a count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting Frans Kambinda Ndara (35).

The incident occurred on 1 October at a bar in Ngcangcana village, south of Rundu when Mwonde was off-duty.

It is alleged that Mwonde used his service weapon – a Macarov pistol – to shoot Ndara.  The weapon has since been seized and will be used as an exhibit in the case.

The court postponed the case to 7 December for further Investigation and for Mwonde to acquire legal representation.

Prosecutor, Michael Munika represented the State in the matter.  - jmuyamba@nepc.com.na
