No rest for Mboma … as she heads to Croatia

After a sensational performance in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma will continue her world conquer when she runs in Croatia in the Golden Continental Tour event tomorrow.

Mboma amazed a glorious win in the season’s end of the Wanda Diamond League in Zurich, storming to victory in the 200m in a new world and African U/20 and her personal best time of 21.78 seconds.

She beat Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson in a superb battle that went to the wire. Jackson managed a personal best time of 21.81 seconds, while Dina Asher-Smith from Britain held on to third place in 22.19 seconds.

With the win, the 18-year-old sprint prodigy became the first Namibian to win the highly-coveted Diamond League trophy.

Mbomba told AthleticsWeekli.com: “When I crossed the finish line, I did not know that I had won. Then I just saw my name and I was like, ‘Wow!”

“This season was quite tough and very busy. I did a lot of races, so now I am feeling a bit tired. This trophy means a lot to me. I am glad I was able to run here and get this victory, but I still have some two more competitions in my schedule.”

Tomorrow, Mboma will again go head-to-head with Jackson in Zagreb.

Her coach Henk Botha said Jackson is fairly strong, but he expects a good performance from his athlete.

He revealed that Namibia’s other sprint wonder, Beatrice Masilingi, who was out of the Zurich meet because she battled flu, will also not compete in Croatia.

“It’s because of precautions; she hasn’t trained and we were not sure whether she will be able to run, so we withdrew her early enough for the event organisers to give another athlete the opportunity,” said Botha, adding she will definitely run in Kenya on 18 September.

“In Nairobi, it will only be Beatrice and Christine that are fairly strong, and we will have fun there and come home and rest,” he said.
