Nust launches marathon to assist students

The Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) launched a marathon/fun walk yesterday to raise funds for students unable to cover their registration fees.

This inaugural marathon is scheduled to take place on 30 September in Windhoek. According to Shoki Kandjimi, the president of Nust Alumni, the university decided to organise this event after recognising the financial struggles many students face during each semester’s start.

“The Nust Alumni Association Executive Committee (Exco), in line with its mandate to assist the university’s fundraising efforts for development and aiding underprivileged students, has taken the initiative to hold a fundraising event.

The primary goal is to source funds that will assist undergraduate and postgraduate students in covering their registration fees for the 2024 academic year,” Kandjimi said.

He added that one of the main barriers hindering access to higher education in the country is the registration fee.

“This fee presents the first and foremost challenge for numerous matriculates, especially those coming from underprivileged backgrounds, at the beginning of each academic year,” he explained.

Ndawana Haitembu, the official ambassador for the initiative, also addressed the event and expressed her happiness at serving the students.

She conveyed her understanding of the challenges they experience while trying to gather money for registration.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this prestigious initiative.

Having been a student myself, I truly comprehend the frustrations that arise in relation to registration.

Consequently, I extend my gratitude to the Nust Alumni Association for affording me the opportunity to play a role in motivating all stakeholders to support this event,” she said.
