The academic landscape has witnessed a concerning trend in the performance of history subjects within the social sciences. While 2022 saw a disheartening 15.5% success rate, there was a modest improvement in 2023 with an 18.5% achievement. This raises pivotal questions regarding the efficacy of teaching methodologies, the commitment of senior education officers, and the availability of adequate resources to support both educators and learners.

Role of teachers

One crucial aspect to consider is whether educators are doing enough to foster academic success in history. Teachers serve as the backbone of the education system, influencing students’ comprehension and passion for a subject. Are they employing innovative teaching methods? Are they sufficiently motivated and equipped to instill a love for history in their students?

Support from senior education officers

The commitment of senior education officers is paramount in driving positive change. Do these officers provide the necessary guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to history teachers? A collaborative effort between teachers and educational leadership is essential to create an environment conducive to academic excellence.

Availability of teaching materials

Effective teaching requires a diverse array of resources. Are history teachers provided with adequate materials to enhance the learning experience?
