Thieves ransack old-age home
By Rochelle Neidel TSUMEB – Pensioners at Tsumeb’s Nomtsoub Old Age Home were left licking their wounds after thieves broke into their residence, making away with food, pots and cutlery, among other items. The burglars broke into the kitchen of the old-age home in the early hours of the morning yesterday. The thieves did not waste time and even took off with old clothing that was donated to the old-age home by members of the community. New Era visited the old-age home, where visibly dismayed elderly were sitting under trees, frustrated as they were unable to eat their daily breakfast due to this evil act. One male pensioner was so frustrated he walked away as New Era approached him for comment. Matron at the old-age home, Magdalena Neis, said she was saddened by the fact that criminals had resorted to taking food intended for the elderly and helpless of the town. She said when she reported to work yesterday morning she found the kitchen in a very messy state, whilst trying to figure out why things were so unorganized she came across a lock that had been broken. “At this stage there is no food to cook for the day, what about tomorrow, the elderly are already suffering,” she said with teary eyes. Neis says it is the second time that there has been a break in. It is not clear what the stolen goods are valued at. Police deputy regional commander, Willem Peter, confirmed break in at the old age home but could not give further details. “I can confirm that the crime happened, however, the preliminary findings are not yet ready, but police investigations continue,” he said Members of the Tsumeb community that are at liberty to donate any food stuffs are requested to contact Moses Awiseb at 0854178609.
