Pot of Mahangu & Equal Rights

Home Archived Pot of Mahangu & Equal Rights

John Ekongo

Recently, the topic on everyone’s lips has been the issue of culture, tradition and morality. I have heard many people complaining and ranting about how Namibia is a society without a proud traditional culture. If it exists, it’s only spoken and preached, but not practised.

A couple of days ago, a gathering with friends revealed some serious, strong-worded opinions. Brace yourselves, in the words of some female peers (of mine) independent women have replaced the word culture and tradition.

Over the years, the battle between the roles of the two sexes has always dominated such friendly gatherings of mid-twenty-year-olds, with a steady supply of classy wines for the ladies and a fat bottle of some sort of whiskey for the guys.

My white Oshiwambo neighbour (he got blessed with good genes) seemed to agree wholeheartedly. In his opinion, if a woman cannot cook a proper pot of mahangu, then well let’s just say that convincing him that you are a culture-well traditional person will be a difficult task.

As things had it, a lady friend sprang to defend the female clan. Now it did not temper her to state that an independent woman is not inspired by Beyonc??????’??
