By Surihe Gaomas WINDHOEK Speeding, driving without licences, unlicensed vehicles and drunken driving were the most common traffic violations detected at roadblocks in the Erongo Region over the festive season. This was uncovered by the Xupifa Eemwenyo Road Safety Campaign which kicked off on December 1 last year, showing that speeding was at the top of the list. Law enforcement officials apprehended 95 people for driving without licenses at the Karibib roadblock, while several other motorists were issued with tickets for overloading and bad tyres at 14 and 34 incidents respectively. Several accidents claimed lives in the region, where a total of four people died on December 8 last year at around 18h20 on the Swakopmund/Walvis Bay main road when two vehicles collided head on. The following day, a three-year-old child died and the mother sustained serious injuries when the driver (father) lost control of their vehicle and overturned. This happened at 17h30 on the Usakos/Arandis Road about 48 km outside Usakos. Another two people also perished a day after Christmas at about 13h00 on the Walvis Bay/Khomas Hochland gravel road, some 80 km from Walvis Bay, when the driver lost control of his vehicle and overturned. Three other people were injured in the same accident. At Uis, a 45-year-old woman died in a road accident at about 22h00, 45 km from Uis on the road to Henties Bay when the driver lost control and overturned the vehicle. The Erongo police also arrested five illegal Zimbabwean immigrants, 13 people were fined for hawking and trading without a trader’s certificate and one suspect was caught for the illegal possession of marijuana. As part of its crime prevention campaign, the police also made several searches at various nightclubs in towns, confiscating five knives. The Erongo police have so far issued a total of 1 096 summons, 89 warnings, 81 for drunken driving, and recorded eight road fatalities.
