The cricket teams of Windhoek Gymnasium have been the dominating forces in this year’s Momentum Schools League, which came to a close recently.
The youngsters took a total of four divisional wins, with WAP being the second strongest school with two overall victories. Gobabis Gymnasium managed a single win at the end of the season.
In the U19/A final Windhoek Gymnasium met Pro-Ed from Swakopmund. The coastal players won the toss and opted to bat first.
They managed 123/4 in the allotted overs, while their opponents from the capital replied with 124/1 and won by 9 wickets. Top performer in the match was Charl Britz, who scored an aggressive 98 runs.
In the senior B division they, however, suffered a defeat against the visitors from Gobabis Gymnasium. This time around they batted first, scoring 151/4 in the allotted overs. Gobabis then brought their A game, amassing 152/3 in 22.3 overs and winning the final by 7 wickets.
The next divisional win of Windhoek Gymnasium came when their U15 team defeated WAP by an incredible 9 wickets in the final. The eventual winners scored 178 runs in the allotted overs, restricting WAP to 166 in their allotted overs. Best player of the day for the champions was Lian Rossouw, who scored 78 runs.
The youngsters of Windhoek Gymnasium continued their haul in the U13/A category where they again faced WAP. Only able to post 86/4 in 25 overs, WAP were quickly put on the back foot with Windhoek Gymnasium’s batting order showing some great skill. They eventually clinched a 6-wicket victory after scoring 87/4 in 22.3 overs.
Their second team was equally impressive in the B division. Their opponents, Parkies, kicked things off with 132/7 in 20 overs. They did put up a great display of
cricket, but Windhoek Gymnasium was too strong, finishing off their innings with 134/7 in 17.3 overs, winning by 3 wickets.
The U11 division was dominated by WAP. In both the A and B categories their players had the upper hand over their respective opponents.
During the A final, Windhoek Gymnasium batted first, scoring 62/all out. WAP struggled a bit in their innings, but held on to a 2-wicket win after achieving 63/8 in 23 overs.
Their B team had less trouble securing the title. Batting first and amassing 151/4 in 20 overs, Windhoek Gymnasium was bowled out for 68 runs, losing the match by 83 runs.
