Embracing cultural diversity

Laughter, joy, fun and cultural diversity were on display at this year’s International University of Management (IUM) annual cultural festival.

The ongoing festival, being held under the theme “Echoes of the Past: Embrace our Diverse Cultures”, is showcasing the university’s dedication to providing a deeper understanding and appreciation of Namibia’s diverse cultures for its students.

Charles Makanyeza, the university’s acting vice chancellor said culture is very unique as it can be observed through various mediums such as music, language, and religion.

“Every exhibition, performance, and interactive experience is thoughtfully crafted to immerse us in the echoes of history, enabling us to explore and honour the legacies that have shaped our present. It is said people who do not understand their history shall not have an identity,” he said.

Makanyeza went: “This event underscores our commitment to bridging cultural divides and enhancing our collective appreciation of the global fabric. By engaging with these traditions, we strengthen the bonds that unite us, and celebrate the diversity that enriches our community.”

“By engaging with the echoes of the history, we can all gain valuable insights into the customs, values and stories handed down through generations. So, this connection to the past fosters a deeper sense of identity and belonging, encouraging individuals to respect and preserve the cultural diversity that defines our shared human experience,” emphasised Makanyeza.

He said embracing traditions empowers the young generation to carry forward the wisdom of the past while contributing their unique perspectives to the ever-evolving intricacies of global culture.

Meanwhile, Mbunza chief Alfons Kaundu, said he had observed with great concern that many young people are emulating European culture.

“It is very much a concern, and I would like to urge every tradition to ensure that their cultural practices are observed and preserved. Every culture has its customs, traditions, and cultural practices and it must be fully respected,” he said.

Kaundu added: “Our culture is our identity. Everywhere you go, you will be identified by your culture. So, it is important to know what cultural practices, what cultural songs, and what cultural heritage we have in our traditions.”

VIBEZ! also chatted with students at the festival.

Miss IUM finalist Constance Chinyama described the event as beautiful and impactful, adding that such events unified students from different cultures and highlighted the importance of celebrating one’s culture.

Another finalist, Leandra Maart said the event was uplifting and brightening.

“Witnessing the performances of the many diverse cultural groups and the culture that was brought out, takes us back to our roots, which is amazing,” she said.

The cultural festival will conclude tomorrow.
