All she dreams of is getting educated

All she dreams of is getting educated

Her ultimate dream was to go to school, study and make a life for herself, but finances always hindered that process, making it impossible to even imagine being in a classroom.

Ingenesia Murangi (29) said she does not come from a good background, as she dropped out of school early.

“I prayed and asked for guidance, as I come from a poor background, and dropped out of school when I was in grade eight. I have noticed that I am a smart person. I can speak and write English,” said Murangi, who graduated with a basic computer level one and English for IT from the Hatika Adult Education Centre.

The Hatika Adult Education centre aims to equip adult learners with knowledge and skills through lifelong learning.

It was established on 4 May 2019, hosting adult learners on Saturday mornings, and giving basic lessons to Namibians aged 18 to 60.

Murangi realised the potential of education, and has developed a passion for returning to the classroom to get the education she needs.

“I am in the mood, and have the desire to go back to school, but the problem is money. My parents don’t have money, and that’s an issue. I thank the Hatika Centre because they have made my dreams a reality. I had a dream of going to school since I dropped out, and here I am,” said the ecstatic graduate.

Founder and educator Wilfred Mbamba (30) believes the centre plays an important role in providing basic education to Namibians.

The centre is located in the Goreangab informal settlement.

Mbamba said, “Some students come to the centre lost, but they leave with wisdom, and end up improving their lives”.

“Hatika Adult Education Centre hosted its graduation ceremony recently, with 22 students receiving certificates of completion for courses, including English for IT 1 and 3, Basic Computer Level 1, Cooking and Waitressing,” said the proud teacher.

He added that the ceremony drew a crowd of both students and tutors.

“Additionally, the waitressing students were assigned to complete their internship at Xwama Cultural Restaurant as part of their course requirement,” he brimmed with joy.

The centre marked its fifth anniversary last week, reflecting on the impact that it has had in the literacy and adult education space.
