Turkish Film Days starts on Monday till Thursday at the Franco-Namibian Cutlural Centre (FNCC) featuring four different movies from various periods of Turkish cinema screening.
The festival is free of charge. Turkish cinema celebrated its centennial in 2014 and it was marked by the first Turkish Film Days organised by Embassy of Turkey in Windhoek in collaboration with the FNCC. The event will start with a historical movie titled Son Mektup (The Last Letter), which marks the centennial of the heroic Gallipoli Battle that took place in Çanakkale, Turkey in 1915 and changed indeed the course of the WWI.
The Film Days will continue with three different movies from various periods and contexts of Turkish cinema.
Son Mektup (The Last Letter) (2015) is about Pilot Captain Salih Ekrem, a young air officer and one of the first Ottoman pilots. He lost his wife during the birth of his little daughter, Gülmelek. In February 1915 with the first assaults of the British fleet, Salih Ekrem entrusts Gülmelek to her grandmother’s care and leaves Istanbul to go to Gallipoli, flying on “one of the first planes”. One day, while engaged in an air reconnaissance mission, Salih rushes to the aid of a group of Turkish medical personnel, among which is a young nurse by the name of Nihal, when they are attacked by two English planes.
-Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım(The Girl with Red Scarf) (1978) screening next Tuesday is a
story of a dilemma between a woman’s love and her logic. Asya, a young girl with a strict mother, meets Ilyas who is a womaniser city man, and they fall in love. They get over the hardships and have a quick happy marriage. However, after he helps a man one night, Ilyas’s life changes forever and he leaves Asya and Samet, their son and doesn’t come back.
Eşkıya (Bandit) (1996) screening on Wednesday is an epic adventures of the legendary Baran, the Bandit following his release from prison. After serving 35 years, it is no surprise that the world has changed dramatically. Still, Baran can’t help but be shocked to discover that his home village is now underwater thanks to the construction of a new dam. He then heads for Istanbul to get revenge upon his former best friend, the man who snitched on him and stole his lover Keje.
Beynelmilel (The International) (2006) showing on Thursday is about
THE 80’s Turkey, local musicians of Adiyaman (southeast province in Anatolia) who is hired by the military and trained to welcome one of the forceful generals of coup regime. However, the activists in Adiyaman are waiting to welcome the generals, too. Haydar, a political science student, who is in love with Gülendam, daughter of Abuzer the conductor, cooperates with her to organize a protest against the generals of coup regime.
